چکیده

A stochastic model for generating disturbances in landscapes that interfaces with geographic information systems (GIS) is presented. The model operates on a lattice (rectangular array of points) using a space–time Markov process, which gives a stochastic simulation of growth patterns in terms of parameters of the local region. The model generates disturbance patterns on the landscape based on user-defined inputs of the total area disturbed and the number of patches to be disturbed. The model is developed in a Cþþ software package named ‘‘TDsimulator’’ (‘‘Terrain Disturbance Simulator’’) which can be used to predict changes in landscape cover under a variety of stochastic scenarios. The software comprises a set of GIS routines that collectively yield the disturbance patterns. A demonstration of the stochastic model is provided for simulating fire behaviour in a forested landscape. The numerical examples illustrate the total disturbance impact under different initial conditions and scenarios. & 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Spatially Explicit and Stochastic Simulation of Forest- Landscape Fire Disturbance and Succession

Understanding disturbance and recovery of forest landscapes is a challenge because of complex interactions over a range of temporal and spatial scales. Landscape simulation models offer an approach to studying such systems at broad scales. Fire can be simulated spatially using mechanistic or stochastic approaches. We describe the fire module in a spatially explicit, stochastic model of forest l...

Introducing a New Formulation for the Warehouse Inventory Management Systems: with Two Stochastic Demand Patterns

This paper presents a new formulation for warehouse inventory management in a stochastic situation. The primary source of this formulation is derived from FP model, which has been proposed by Fletcher and Ponnambalam for reservoir management. The new proposed mathematical model is based on the first and the second moments of storage as a stochastic variable. Using this model, the expected value...

A comparison of large-scale spatial vegetation patterns following clearcuts and fires in Ontario’s boreal forests

The role of wildfires as the most significant source of disturbance in boreal forests has been equaled by clearcuts during the past five decades. Post-disturbance revegetation patterns are important because they have a direct influence on many ecological processes. However, the knowledge of post-disturbance changes in spatial patterns of forest cover is scarce, especially at large scales. We ex...

Determining the size of a complete disturbance landscape: multi-scale, continental analysis of forest change.

The scale of investigation for disturbance-influenced processes plays a critical role in theoretical assumptions about stability, variance, and equilibrium, as well as conservation reserve and long-term monitoring program design. Critical consideration of scale is required for robust planning designs, especially when anticipating future disturbances whose exact locations are unknown. This resea...

A general model for simulating the effects of landscape heterogeneity and disturbance on community patterns

An individual-based, spatially explicit stochastic lattice model, CAPS, was designed to examine multiple processes responsible for spatial patterns of abundance and diversity of sessile species in heterogeneous landscapes. Species simulated by CAPS differ in habitat preferences (niche width), dispersal of propagules, and relative fecundity. The spatial distribution of habitat types are represen...
